In the past months, the FIA Endurance World Championship WEC 2022 has captivated us with its thrilling and partially dramatic races. We were on the edge of our seats while the 911 RSR drew one action-filled round after the other.
During the final race of the WEC 2022 in Bahrain, the Porsche factory team will start with both 911 RSR in good positions and therefore has the chance to win the manufacturer and driver titles in the GTE-Pro class. Porsche is just one point away from the top in the manufacturer’s ranking.
We’re witnessing the end of an era in Porsche factory motorsport in Bahrain. We’re very aware of this fact and that motivates the team to do their absolute best. We’d like to clinch another one-two result and take home the big trophies for winning the world championship titles.
Due to the long driving time of eight hours in Bahrain, a victory counts for 38 instead of the usual 25 points. For the world championship calculations, this means when one of the both 911 RSR of the factory team win the race and the second vehicle crosses the finish line, then the manufacturer title is bound to be given to Porsche. If starting number 92 achieves pole position and finishes the final run as victor, the team Kévin Estre and Michael Christensen will achieve the driver titles for the second time since 2018/2019. “It will be an enormously important race for our entire team. We want to win, score maximum points and, at best, achieve both world championship titles,” says Michael Christensen. “The most important thing is that we always stay cool in the heat of the moment.”
It’ll definitely be highly emotional in Bahrain. It’s the final race for the Porsche 911 RSR in the GTE-Pro class – and we’re competing with a very cool design. We’re ready!
Gianmaria Bruni in the 911 RSR with the starting number 91 also has the chance to win the drivers championship: The Italian is just a mere 14 points away from the top in the overall ranking.
Regardless of the result on Saturday, we’ll see a lot of sad faces because the GTE-Pro class will be history. The intense battle between manufacturers with these fantastic GT race cars was always sensational.
