Formula E in the year 2138: wrapping up the season with a vision of the future

Formula E offers fast-paced excitement at close quarters—and it is one of the most technologically advanced motorsport championships today. Now the design studio Automobilist shows us its vision of where and how the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team’s 99X Electric could be racing in the year 2138.

The sixth season of Formula E has just come to an end—time to recharge our batteries for a moment, prepare with full power for the start of the next season in January and think about what we can look forward to in the future. Because if there’s one thing that’s certain it’s that motor racing will continue to make our hearts beat faster with emotion and spine-tingling moments.

With their Porsche poster series, the CGI specialists at the Automobilist design studio have already given us a glimpse of what this future could look like, transporting a 911 RSR to the moon, landing a 356 on Mars and letting the 917 KH race through a futuristic Le Mans. So how will we experience Formula E in the future? The Automobilist team came up with a fitting solution for this vision as well—inspired by the exciting season finale in Berlin.

In their version of the future, the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team’s 99X Electric could be setting new lap records 118 years from now in the gigacity of Tokyo—on a suspended racetrack floating above the skyscrapers of the city and its billions of inhabitants. Pavel Turek, managing director and co-founder of Automobilist, believes the future may happen like this: “I think that virtual and real action in motorsport will become more and more intertwined in the future. From the comfort of their living rooms, fans will be able to compete virtually against their idols racing on the real track at the same time. This will result in an unimaginable number of participants. And the prize money will amount to a million dollars, because everyone who competes will pay a one-dollar entry fee.”

This or something like this is what things could look like just over a hundred years from now. Coming up first, however, are a few intense weeks of preparation for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, with both virtual and real test drives in the pipeline. Then the seventh season gets going in January. We’re already looking forward to it.
