2024 on the start button: looking forward to the IMSA start at Daytona

In just a few weeks, the racing cars will be doing their laps again: The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship kicks off the new season with the 24 Hours of Daytona on January, 27th. The first race this year will once again traditionally take place on the four-kilometer Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach.

Four Porsche 963s on the road to success

Porsche is entering the new season with a total of four cars of its hybrid prototype 963, including two works teams and two customer teams.

The Porsche Penske Motorsport works team will drive the sister cars #6 and #7, with Frenchman Mathieu Jaminet and Briton Nick Tandy driving the #6 Porsche 963. A successful duo: both drove the newly launched 963 to its first victory in Long Beach in April 2023. The crew will receive active support at the 24-hour race in Daytona: Kévin Estre from France and Laurens Vanthoor from Belgium will complete the team. The two drivers are experienced endurance racers - they are normally on course for success in the WEC with the 963.

The 963 #7 is driven by the Brazilian Felipe Nasr and the American Dane Cameron, who previously raced for Porsche Penske Motorsport in the WEC. American IndyCar star Josef Newgarden and Australian Matt Campbell will join the team for the race in Daytona. As a former driver for Team Penske, Josef Newgarden is very familiar with the special features and challenges of the US race tracks. Matt Campbell is also an absolute IMSA professional. He drove for Porsche Penske Motorsport in the American racing series until the 2023 season. From the start of the current season, the works driver will be driving the 963 in the WEC.

Last season, we fought for the title in the IMSA series right up to the last race. Our ambitions for 2024 are high: we want to be right at the front in North America at the end.

The customer teams are also back on board. The 963 of customer team Proton Competition will be driven by the driver duo Gianmaria Bruni and Neel Jani. The drivers Tijmen van der Helm, Phil Hanson, Ben Keating and Richard Westbrook will be competing for JDC-Miller Motorsports.

Record number of entries for the new season

New for this year's racing series: the LMP3 class has been dropped. Nevertheless, the interest was so great that the IMSA had to cancel some entries. 48 vehicles are registered for all eleven races - the maximum has been reached.

The opening race in Daytona will see 60 cars take part in the GTP, LMP2, GTD-Pro and GTD classes, ten of which will race in the top GTP class.

24 Hours of Daytona

The endurance classic is an absolute highlight for drivers and motorsport fans. While most racing series are still in their winter break at the start of the year, the Daytona oval is a tough test for the new season. Its banked corners and infield sections are unparalleled in endurance racing. What's more, due to the time of year, the drivers have to drive in the dark for longer and then rely almost exclusively on the headlights of their vehicles - unlike in other endurance races, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which takes place in June. Incidentally, both races, the 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans, together with the 12 Hours of Sebring, form the legendary Triple Crown of endurance racing.

Outlook for the 2024 racing series

After the race is before the race: Once the cars have crossed the finish line in Daytona Beach on January 28, preparations for the ten subsequent races of the season will already begin.

  • The 12 Hours of Sebring is on the program from March 13th to 16th.
  • It continues in April in Long Beach, on April 19th/20th.
  • This is followed by Laguna Seca from May, 10th to 12th, then Detroit from May 31 to June 1.
  • The 6 Hours of Watkins Glen will take place from June, 20th-23rd.
  • In addition to the other US venues, the race cars will also race once in Canada, at Mosport from July, 12th to 14th.
  • In August, motorsport fans can look forward to two dates: Road America from August, 2nd to 4th and Virginia from August 23rd to 25th.
  • The penultimate race of the season is the 6 Hours of Indianapolis from September 20th to 22nd.
  • As always, the season will end with the traditional Petit Le Mans race in Braselton from October 9th to 12th.

We are already keeping our fingers crossed - and are looking forward to Daytona when the starting flag falls for the season opener on January 27th and the circuit finally heats up again.
