Porsche in Le Mans: Next goal class victory

Le Mans. This year, the worldwide most infamous 24 hours are due to take place for the 90th time. All signs point to victory for the legendary 24-hour race in Le Mans – also the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC season – on the 13.626 kilometer long “Circuit des 24 Heures”.

The Porsche GT team is entering two of the approximately 378 kW (515 hp) powered 911 with the ambitious goal to achieve class victory on June 11 and 12, 2022 in Le Mans. Because the final race of both 911 RSR is also meant to complete the in-house trophy collection.

“We still have a score to settle,” explains Thomas Laudenbach, Director of Porsche Motorsport, “Our vehicle has won on almost all tracks of FIA WEC since its debut in 2019 – just the GTE-Pro class in Le Mans is missing from our performance statistics.”

Richard Lietz and Gianmaria Bruni will receive support from the Frenchman Frédéric Makowiecki behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 RSR with the starting number 91. Its sister car running under the number 92 will be shared by GTE-Pro world championship leading man Kévin Estre and Michael Christensen together with the Belgian Laurens Vanthoor. This trio previously scored a class victory in 2018 in Le Mans with the 911 in “Pink Pig” design.

With a total of 19 overall triumphs and 108 class victories, Porsche is by far the most successful brand throughout the most important international sportscar race.

The motivation is at an all-time high because everyone wants to crown the final stint of our factory RSR with a class victory in Le Mans. Not only am I excited about the first laps around the track, but so are the fans whom we expect to come in droves.

After the restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 90. edition of the 24-hour circuit is once more bound to take place as grand spectacle: Up to 250.000 fans are expected by the Sarthe River during the second weekend in June with the jet set bound to congregate in the city of Le Mans.

And that’s something entirely familiar: In 1997, US actor Paul Newman placed second on the track with a Porsche 935, while colleague and Porsche fan Steve McQueen previously debuted in 1970 for the movie “Le Mans”.

Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender also switched out the Walk of Fame for the Circuit de la Sarthe and made his Le Mans debut in a Proton Porsche. Those interested in learning more: His personal “Road to Le Mans” is documented throughout its own YouTube series: www.porsche.com/RoadToLeMans

Pure adrenaline: The Hunaudières straight is typical for Le Mans. Drivers give full throttle with the vehicles breaching over 330 kph multiple times each round. The highest achieved speed was 405 kph.

The track boasts a unique character. The overall performance is decided by the highest speed on the long straights.

After the hyper pole qualifying and free training, the traditional Drivers Parade 24h Le Mans is due to take place on Friday (10.6.), before the French Tricolore is waved on Saturday, June 11 and the 24-hour race is to start at 4 PM (CET).
