Dressed for success – why racing gear matters

Our dashing drivers in the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, André and Pascal are instantly recognizable – and not only for their winning smiles. Both on and off the track, their smart, slick racing livery sets them apart. Yes, they do look cool. Very cool. But, as with every aspect of racing design, function is as important as form.

In a high-profile sport like Formula E, sponsorship is what keeps the wheels going round and the crowds roaring for more. So, the colours chosen by the designers echo the unmistakable branding of our 99X Electric racecars, strongly reinforcing the identity of the Team and sponsors. But there’s a practical side too. For example, the upper part of the latest racing suits, formerly white, is now black. Why? Because the white was being reflected on the steering wheel. A potential distraction, one which no racing driver can afford in the heat of the moment.

When it comes to suits, nothing says “on point” quite like Italian styling. Our one-piece racing suits are designed and made by our partner Puma in Turin. The suits must be flexible, allowing the drivers unrestricted movement in any position. They must be breathable, to keep body temperature from reaching dangerous highs. Above all, they must conform to FIA safety standards. Made from a synthetic fabric with a 100% aramid chemical composition, they are not only fireproof, but also offer the best heat resistance. And of course, they’re tailor-made to fit like a glove. Naturally, such exclusive suits are not to be consigned to the thrift shop after racing; our drivers still cherish their previously-worn colours and wear them for track testing and practice.

While the suits instantly identify the TAG Heuer Porsche Team, the drivers’ helmets are where they can put their individual stamp on their ensembles. Custom-painting their helmets is a tradition that goes right back to their childhood go-karting days. André’s black and white design – co-created with his dad – gives a shout-out to German national teams, while the red, gold, black and white of Pascal reflect his aggressive, winning attitude. Both drivers wear top-end carbon fibre helmets. Ultra-lightweight, they are still strong enough to withstand a bullet – which is just what small stones kicked up are like. An impact-absorbing thermoplastic layer inside snugly follows the shape of the head. The visor is interchangeable to match sunny or overcast conditions. Safety aside, there’s more in store: Inside the helmet, the tiny Driver’s Eye camera gives fans an unrivaled in-race visual experience from the driver’s point of view.

Finally, the drivers both wear Speedcat Pro racing shoes. Fireproof, like all racing gear, they’re light too, and thin enough to allow drivers to really feel the pedals. But they also have to offer firm support for high-impact braking. So, they are reinforced with lightweight carbon supports. As you can see, when it comes to racing gear, one must be dressed every inch the part – literally, from head to toe.
